For instance, some grass and plant fibers can be used to make ropes and aluminum cans to be used as a stove. Use your imagination and be creative.

For those people who want to learn some useful DIY survival tools, this guide is something you should look at. It is essential because, with limited resources, you can create something new out of ordinary materials.

DIY Survival Tools

The need to create something out of just ordinary supplies can be a helpful skill in terms of survival. In this situation, you need to be able to have the idea of making basic equipment to meet all your basic needs.

Basic needs mean finding a source of water, a way to cook, medicine, and a place to stay. Finding a good source of water is very critical. You can only live for three days without water.

You need to have a filtering and purifying system in your bag for this.

For DIY survival tools, imagination will be your key in times of disaster. You should think quickly and use some of the things you can find in your surroundings. Others, you can prepare in advance. Here are some of the basic tools that you can make your own to survive such a disaster:

Fire Starters

Char cloth has been around the world for ages now. And it is for a good reason, they are lightweight, easy to make, very compact, and a great in igniting tinder. Char cloth is created through pyrolysis.

It is some thermochemical decomposition of organic material at a very high temperature without oxygen. It is created through combustion without burning the cloth completely. Char cloth is a useful material that you should be carrying in your bag to start a fire.

Char cloth can be useful during a disaster if you need something to start a fire. To make char cloth, you need a tight metal container. Make a small hole in it using a nail to make sure that the smoke can escape.

You only need to be mindful of the size of the hole as the bigger it gets, the higher the chance oxygen can get inside. It can burn your cloth entirely.

For the cloth choices, make sure to find a woven cloth, 100% cotton. Cut it into smaller pieces and then place it inside. Once you have all of it inside, put the tin in hot coals until it stops smoking.

Leave it for a few minutes until the coal is fully off, and then once you open it, you have plenty of char cloth to be added in your BOB.

Penny Can Stove

Alcohol can stove one of the must-haves for every backpacker. It uses aluminum cans that will make up the stove, and the alcohol will serve as the fuel. There are indeed many available portable stoves out there.

But this alcohol stove is easy to make and won’t weigh you down. Instead of buying stoves, why not make it. It is very easy to do with the right tools and base materials. It only weighs 2 ounces so that it won’t add much weight to your BOB.

Here are among the most important things you need to make your own can stove:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Scissors or Tin Cutter
  • Markers
  • Nail
  • Piece of Paper
  • Sandpaper
  • Penny
  • Pliers
  • Denatured Alcohol
  • Knife
  • Baked bin tin

Procedure:

  1. Using sandpaper, sand off the paint of the can. It will be easier later once the can is sealed as it is less likely to crumble. Once done, rinse the can properly.

  2. The next thing to do is to pin some holes in the center of the bottom of the can. After that, you need to make a surrounding pinhole for the burner itself. It is recommended to have at least 21 holes to work and distribute the heat properly. Then using a piece of paper, create a mark that is 1 cm in between and cut this as a strip. If you cut the piece to 20cm long, this will leave a gap and will make it easier to put it together. Wrap this piece of paper in the cut-out bottom of the can, leaving a gap between the end. It should be positioned 5mm from the edge so the pinholes will sit on the side. Starting from the gap, make some pinholes in the center and work around it.

  3. The next thing that you need to do is to mark out the lines to cut. The base will be the smallest bit, and it is made from the can that still has the paint. The paint is there for a reason, as this will be the inside can. It will serve as a good seal once used for the first time after getting heat up. Using your marker, make a line all around the inner can, 1.5 cm from the base. Then the outer can needs to be 3cm from the base.

  4. Using a cutter or a knife, you can proceed to cut the cans. Cut the can a cm away from the original line, and using a scissor, you can clean it up a bit. Then crimp the edge of the base so it will be able to fit inside the top can. Using the pliers, grip about 5mm of the can and twist and pull the edge all around.

  5. To join the cans together, you need to push the top aluminum can cover the crimped edge of the bottom can. If you are unable to fit them together, you can use an extra can to push the base of it to the top can. Rolling the edge of the can inside of the top will make it easier to fit them together.

  6. Now you have a mini can that can serve as your stove. You might need to use some sandpaper for finishing touches to get rid of the excess paints. The critical part of it all is the stand or base. You can simply use the top of a baked bin tin, and this is used as the holder of the fuel to prime the stove. Once you have enough fuel for it, cover the top hole with a penny, and you can use a lighter to put fire in the base. This bottom will be able to produce enough heat, and it will start to vaporize and create a stove-like fire.

Due to its lightweight ability, this became a staple to any preppers out there. They are much stronger than their looks because of their double-walled body. If you are in a pinch, this will be your saving grace during those times.

Hand Warmers

Hand warmers are beneficial during winter, and it gives you enough warmth to your hands. Yes, there are indeed readily-made warmers out there in the market. But post-SHTF, there won’t be anything to buy at all.

If you properly stockpile the materials or if you can forage them in some urban environment, you can make your very own warmers.

For hand, you might need to look for iron filings, shavings, or a powder about 25 grams per making. Also, it is crucial to have salt with you, combine all of the ingredients in a plastic container, and mix them properly.

Next is to add one tablespoon of sawdust or charcoal then proceed to mix again. Once done, you can store the mixed ingredients in an air-tight container until you need it.

When you need a hand warmer, just put the mixture in a plastic bag. Add some water and make sure that the bag is tightly sealed. Squeeze and then shake the bag until it starts to warm up. You can also put the plastic bag in mittens or pockets to keep the warmth.

Water Distiller

Water is an essential part of survival. You and your family cannot survive without water. You need to stay hydrated at all costs. Any prepper will make sure that part of their skill is to find water sources or at least know how to make a water distiller.

It can come handy when water or other fresh drinking water is not accessible.

To build your water distiller, you need the following basic materials:

  • Large metal pot with a tight lid
  • Drill and drill bit
  • 3/8 inch stainless steel hose barb
  • 3-foot silicone hose with a 3/8 inch diameter (food grade)
  • Large glass container

Procedure:

  1. Start by drilling a hole in the metal lid of the pot. Afterward, insert the hose barb into the hole. Always remember to make sure that the end of the barb is on the outside of the pot.

  2. Make sure to clean, rinse and dry the pot, glass container, and the hose properly with dish soap and hot water then place the clean pot onto the stovetop.

  3. Fill in the large metal top with about a ¾ of impure water and turn on the burner. Wait until the water temperature reaches 200 degrees Fahrenheit or 93.33 celsius. Then place the lid on the metal pot and allow the stream to flow through the hose bard for about 5 minutes.

  4. Lastly, attach a silicone hose to the stainless hose barb. Using the other end of the hose, place it into the glass container. This way, the steam will condense, and it will return to a liquid state. It will eventually drip into the hose going into the glass container. The water in the glass container is now purified.

Just a few pointers, you need to allow the metal pot to cool down before touching it fully. Once the dripping is done, remove it and then clean it thoroughly. You need to clean the metal pot as well as all the contaminants from the water.

Natural Rope

A rope at this point is a necessity for survival. It is an essential piece of your survival gear. Rope making has been around history for quite a long time now. You might be in a scene where you need a rope or a paracord to survive.

It is why it is essential to know how to find materials that can be used to make ropes.

In making cordage, it is advised to use the dry bark found inside in most trees. They are among the considered ideal material to use in this situation. Dead bark is much better, and you need to look for trees like oak, ash, maple, cedar, or elm.

Procedure:

  1. When looking at a tree, you need to consider the fibrous layer. It is the layer found between the bark of the tree and the wood itself. If you are having issues stripping the fibrous material, boiling bark strips in water will make it easy to get the fibers apart.

  2. After you get the fiber strips, you need to roll and twist them together using your hands. This method can also be used to strip dogbane and milkweed stalks. Some plants like cattails and netties may need to be pounded first using stone, but the remaining process will be the same.

  3. Once you have all the fibers, you can proceed to tie all the threads together. You can do this by lining them all up and then tie a knot at one end to keep them all together. Then, divide them into two equal sections. Grab one part in each hand and then slowly twist all the thread in the same direction. As you continue twisting, the two strands will begin to wrap, giving you a rope-like form.

  4. For ropes made from plant fiber, it is easier to add more length to create a long rope. Once you are almost done on the first one, you can grab two more of the sections of the thread and overlap them with the original threads. When you think you have enough rope length, it is time to cut them. In the end, tie a knot so it will prevent it from unraveling. Trim the excess that is sticking out from your finished product.

Being able to make cordage is a great skill. The most important thing for rope-making is to make sure it is strong enough to hold and can stay for long.

Bamboo Fishing Gear

A fishing kit is a survival tool that most preppers should be stacked in their BOB. It is very easy to use, small, and you can do it even without expertise. It is very simple to make and an effective weapon and hunting tool at the same time.

Here are among the few things you need to be able to create a simple bamboo fishing gear:

  • Bamboo stick
  • Knife
  • Strings
  • Dacron line
  • Duct tape
  • Hook
  • Bobber
  • Sandpaper

Procedure:

  1. The first thing must do is to find a piece of a bamboo cane. Usually, go for 8 to 10 feet long (2.4m to 3.0 m), and 1 to 2 inches (2.5 cm to 5.1 cm) in diameter, then cut it at the base. When it comes to a bamboo pole, it is not necessarily to go for the bigger size. It will be an inconvenience to transport, and you will have a hard time holding it. Make sure to cut like 2 to 3 pieces of bamboo so you can have extra to spare.

  2. Using a knife, trim some excess leaves or nubs as close to the main body of the cane. At the end of the cane, find a joint and saw through it. It will make sure that your fishing rod has a closed-end. Using sandpaper, smooth the body of the pole.

  3. Leave the cane to dry and, using a piece of a string, tie the narrow end of the bamboo, and suspend it from the ceiling. This way, you are making sure that you have an even dry out pole. Drying will take about a few weeks to several months to get the optimal dryness. You’ll see the color change, that’s when you know it is completely dry. Drying out the pole is essential as if it is still moist, it becomes less durable and won’t be good enough for catching fish.

  4. Once it is completely dry, you can proceed to attach the fishing line. Run the line along the overall length of the pole. This way, you allow the pole to bend all the way when you are trying to fight a fish. It can prevent it from snapping. Then add some extra pieces of line and use them to tie the running line.

  5. Lastly, attach the hook, bobber, and some sinker. A sinker will be optional at this point. Attach your preferred lure to the end of the line together with a bobber. To shorten the line, pull it back using the loops and wrap them around the handle.

Having fishing equipment will help you survive in the wild. You can use this to find some freshwater fish, and you can also use this as a weapon, who knows what can happen out there.
